Short answer: WhatsApp chatbot cost has two parts: a one-time build and a monthly running bill. a simple chatbot starts at about $290, a WhatsApp business bot that takes orders, bookings or payments at about $790, and an AI chatbot that answers from your own documents at about $1,490. On top of that, Meta charges per message you send — in the US about $0.025 for a marketing message and $0.0034 for a utility message — while the first 1,000 replies to customer-initiated chats each month are free.

Your customers already message you on WhatsApp. The real question is who answers: someone glued to a phone all day, or a bot that also takes orders at 3 a.m.? Before you decide, you need the full picture of what a WhatsApp chatbot costs — not just the build quote, but the monthly bill that follows it.

This guide breaks down WhatsApp chatbot cost line by line: one-time development, Meta’s 2026 message fees by country, hosting and AI usage. We also cover the billing change that took effect on October 1, 2026, what WhatsApp’s terms say about AI chatbots, and how to keep the running cost predictable. All figures are current as of October 20, 2026.

How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost in 2026?

Every WhatsApp chatbot has two price tags: the one-time build and the monthly running cost. Always ask for both. Comparing quotes on build price alone is the most common — and most expensive — mistake.

Bot typeTypical build priceTimelineTypical monthly running cost
Simple menu bot (FAQ, lead capture)from $2901–2 weeks$5–20 hosting + low message fees
Business bot (orders, bookings, payments, admin panel)from $7902–4 weeks$10–60, mostly message fees
AI chatbot (answers from your documents, human handover)from $1,4903–5 weeksAbove + AI usage, depends on traffic
Build prices are TechBlend’s published starting prices; running costs are estimates for small and mid-size businesses.

What makes up WhatsApp chatbot cost?

The one-time build

The build price depends on how much work the bot does: how many conversation flows, which systems it connects to (CRM, store, calendar, payments), whether it uses AI, and whether your team needs an admin panel. We publish our WhatsApp and Telegram chatbot packages with fixed starting prices:

PackageFromWhat’s included
Starter bot$290Menu-and-button Telegram bot, database, 1 integration (sheet, CRM or API), hosting setup, 30 days of support
Business bot$790WhatsApp and/or Telegram, order, booking or payment flow, web admin panel, broadcast messages, multiple integrations, analytics
AI chatbot$1,490AI answers grounded in your documents, WhatsApp + Telegram + website widget, human handover and shared inbox, accuracy testing, usage and cost controls

You’ll also find much cheaper “ready-made bot” offers. Most are templates on a monthly-subscription platform: the bot isn’t yours, and when you stop paying, your flows disappear. Much more expensive quotes usually reflect agency overhead. When comparing, ask three questions: Who owns the source code? Is there a mandatory monthly fee? Which of my systems will the bot actually connect to?

The monthly running cost

  1. Meta’s message fees — by message category and the recipient’s country (next section).
  2. Hosting — a small cloud server, typically $5–20 a month for small and mid-size bots.
  3. AI model usage (if any) — billed per use by the model provider. A well-built bot has spending limits and monitoring.
  4. Maintenance — keeping up with Meta’s API and policy changes, small fixes. Either a fixed monthly retainer or pay-as-you-go.

Some intermediaries (Business Solution Providers, or BSPs) add their own subscription or per-message markup on top of Meta’s fees. If your bot runs directly on Meta’s Cloud API, you skip that layer.

Is the WhatsApp Business API free? Meta’s 2026 pricing explained

Setting up the WhatsApp Business Platform is free, but sending messages isn’t. Since July 1, 2025, Meta charges per delivered message, based on the message category and the recipient’s country code. Messages your customers send to you are always free.

Marketing, utility, authentication and service messages

To start a conversation, a business must use a template approved by Meta. Templates come in three categories. When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens, and inside it you can send free-form service messages.

  • Marketing: promotions, new products, abandoned-cart reminders.
  • Utility: order confirmations, shipping updates, appointment reminders, invoices.
  • Authentication: one-time passcodes for logins.
  • Service: replies inside a customer-initiated conversation. The first 1,000 per business phone number per month are free.

Rates differ enormously by country. Here are Meta’s list prices for a selection of markets:

Recipient marketMarketingUtility / authentication / service
Germany$0.1365$0.0550
United Kingdom$0.0635$0.0220
Brazil$0.0625$0.0068
United Arab Emirates$0.0576$0.0157
Saudi Arabia$0.0576$0.0107
North America (US, Canada)$0.0250$0.0034
India$0.0118$0.0014
Turkey$0.0109$0.0009
USD list prices per delivered message from Meta’s rate cards effective October 1, 2026, as compiled by industry sources. Utility and authentication get volume discounts at high volume; BSPs may add markup. Meta’s official rate card is authoritative.

Two things stand out. First, marketing messages are where the money goes — utility notifications cost a fraction of a cent in most markets. Second, the same campaign costs over ten times more to send to Germany than to Turkey or India, so where your customers live matters as much as how many there are.

What changed on October 1, 2026?

According to Meta’s documentation, two changes took effect on October 1, 2026:

  • Service messages are charged again beyond the free tier. Each business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages per month; anything above is billed. Unused free messages don’t roll over.
  • Utility templates inside an open service window are now charged at the utility rate. They used to be free inside the window.

For most small businesses the impact is modest. But message count is now money, which changes how you design a bot: one well-structured reply instead of four separate bubbles stretches the free tier much further. Meta also stops delivering newly charged service messages for accounts without a payment method on file, so if your bot is live, make sure your Meta Business account has one.

What stays free

  • Messages customers send you — always free.
  • 1,000 service messages per month per business phone number.
  • Click-to-WhatsApp ads: when someone messages you from a Facebook or Instagram ad, a “free entry point” window opens. Meta’s documentation says it can stay open for up to 7 days, and marketing, utility, authentication and service messages sent in it are free.

WhatsApp chatbot cost example: a clinic with 1,500 conversations a month

Let’s make it concrete with a dental clinic in the US. Our assumptions:

  • 1,500 patients message the clinic each month; the bot books each appointment in about 4 service messages → 6,000 service messages.
  • 1,200 reminders (utility templates) go out the day before appointments.
  • Once a month, a campaign goes to 1,000 patients who opted in (marketing).
  • The bot uses button-based flows (no AI) on a small cloud server.
ItemCalculationMonthly
Service messages(6,000 − 1,000 free) × $0.0034$17.00
Appointment reminders1,200 × $0.0034$4.08
Monthly campaign1,000 × $0.025$25.00
HostingSmall cloud server~$10
Total~$56

The same workload would cost about $200 a month in message fees in the UK and about $480 in Germany, because utility and service messages are far more expensive there. In the US, the campaign is the single biggest line: if you want to cut costs, send fewer, better-targeted marketing messages, not fewer reminders.

Adding AI adds model usage on top. That’s why “hybrid” bots — buttons for routine tasks, AI only for free-text questions — are both cheaper and more predictable. If booking is your main use case, see how a bot fits together with calendars, deposits and reminders in our booking system development guide.

Can you run an AI chatbot on WhatsApp Business?

Yes — for your own business’s customer service. What’s not allowed is offering a general-purpose AI assistant as a product over WhatsApp. The “AI Providers” section of the WhatsApp Business Solution Terms strictly prohibits providers whose primary functionality is AI technology from accessing or using the WhatsApp Business Solution, directly or indirectly, with a regional exception for users in the European Economic Area. Meta decides what counts as primary functionality.

FineNot fine
Answering questions about your products, prices and opening hours with AISelling a “chat with AI about anything on WhatsApp” product
Using AI to help with bookings, orders and returnsUsing customer conversations to train general AI models
A bot that answers from your catalog, FAQ and policies and hands over to a human when unsureA bot that answers anything, unrelated to your business

The terms also forbid using business data — even anonymized — to build or train AI models, except fine-tuning a model reserved for your exclusive use. So when you commission an AI chatbot, confirm two things: the bot stays on your business’s topics, and the model provider doesn’t train on your conversations. In our AI integration projects we use API settings that exclude training and keep the bot scoped to the business.

WhatsApp Business App vs. a real API chatbot

WhatsApp Business AppAPI + chatbot
CostFreeBuild + Meta message fees
AutomationFixed greeting, away message, quick repliesMenus, buttons, flows, AI
Connects to your systemsNoCRM, store, calendar, payments, sheets
Team useA few devicesUnlimited agents, shared inbox
Best forA handful of messages a dayWhen messaging has become a workload

The free app is a fine start. Once replying to WhatsApp takes a meaningful part of someone’s day — or you’re losing customers who message after hours — a real bot usually pays for itself quickly.

WhatsApp vs. Telegram: which bot should you build?

If you need to reach customers in most of Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, India or Turkey, the answer is almost always WhatsApp. Telegram wins elsewhere:

  • Cost: Telegram’s Bot API is free to use; WhatsApp charges per message.
  • Rules: Telegram has no template approval or business verification; WhatsApp has both.
  • Speed: Telegram bots are faster to build and launch.
  • Best fit: Telegram for communities, paid channels and internal tools; WhatsApp for customer service, orders, bookings and notifications.

We often run the same bot logic on both: customers use WhatsApp, the team uses Telegram, and both talk to one system. In a well-built bot there’s one brain and several doors.

How long does it take, and what do you need ready?

  1. Conversation design: every question, button and reply is mapped out, and you approve it before any code is written.
  2. Meta Business account and verification: your business portfolio is set up and verified. Make sure your legal name and address match your documents exactly.
  3. Phone number: if the number is active in the WhatsApp app, it must be removed or migrated first — many businesses use a separate number for the bot.
  4. Template approval: your reminders, confirmations and campaigns go through Meta’s review.
  5. Build and test: on a test bot connected to your real systems, which you can try from your own phone early on.
  6. Launch and monitoring: deployment with error alerts, logs and automatic restarts.

A business bot typically goes live in 2–4 weeks. What slows projects down is rarely the code — it’s Meta’s business verification and content decisions — so start verification in parallel with development.

  • Opt-in for marketing: WhatsApp requires customers to opt in before you send them marketing messages, and many countries’ laws require prior consent for commercial electronic messages too. Transactional messages such as order confirmations are treated differently.
  • Personal data: if the bot collects names, phone numbers or addresses, tell users how the data is used (GDPR in the EU and UK, KVKK in Turkey, and similar laws elsewhere). Health data, such as in clinic bots, needs extra care and usually explicit consent.
  • Where data lives: know which server stores conversation logs, for how long and who can access them. Not collecting data you don’t need is the safest policy.

This section is general information, not legal advice; check the rules for your country with a lawyer.

Bottom line: how to keep WhatsApp chatbot cost under control

The cheapest WhatsApp chatbot is the one that automates a single painful task first — bookings, orders or repetitive questions — and proves its value before you add payments, reminders or AI. Designing replies to use fewer messages, keeping marketing sends targeted and owning your code keep WhatsApp chatbot cost predictable as you grow.

Key takeaways

  • Build: from $290 (simple) – $790 (WhatsApp business bot) – $1,490+ (AI).
  • Meta fees depend on country and category; marketing messages are the expensive ones.
  • 1,000 free service messages per number per month; since October 1, 2026, everything above is charged.
  • AI for your own customer service is allowed; offering a general-purpose AI assistant is not.
  • Ask every vendor who owns the code and whether there’s a mandatory monthly fee.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free WhatsApp chatbot?

The WhatsApp Business App’s automatic greeting and away messages are free, but they’re fixed texts, not a bot. A real chatbot runs on the WhatsApp Business Platform, which is free to set up but charges per message you send — and small businesses often stay within the 1,000 free service messages a month.

Do I pay per message or per conversation?

Per delivered message, since July 1, 2025. The price depends on the message category (marketing, utility, authentication or service) and the recipient’s country.

How much does a WhatsApp chatbot cost per month?

Meta’s message fees plus hosting, plus AI usage if the bot uses AI. In our worked example, a US clinic with 1,500 conversations a month pays about $56 in total; most of it is one monthly marketing campaign.

Can I connect ChatGPT to WhatsApp?

For your own business’s customer service, yes: the bot can answer questions about your products and policies with AI. WhatsApp’s terms prohibit offering a general-purpose AI assistant as a product and using customer data to train AI models, so keep the bot scoped to your business.

Can I keep my existing WhatsApp number?

Yes, but if it’s active in the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app, it has to be removed or migrated to the platform first, after which you can’t use it in the phone app as before. Many businesses use a separate number for the bot.

Do I need Meta business verification?

To run a bot at real volume, yes. Verification confirms your business identity and raises your messaging limits. Start it early — it’s often the slowest step of the project.

How long does it take to build a WhatsApp chatbot, and does time affect cost?

Simple bots take 1–2 weeks, business bots with orders or bookings 2–4 weeks, and AI chatbots 3–5 weeks.

Who owns the bot and the data?

In our projects, the source code, server access and WhatsApp Business account are fully yours. Get this in writing from any vendor: with subscription-based bot platforms, the bot and its flows usually stay on the platform.
